Will My Child Experience Pain?
While the procedure itself is painless thanks to local anesthesia, some children may experience minor discomfort after the numbness wears off. This is normal and usually subsides within a few hours. Dr. Alex and our team will provide you with aftercare instructions to help manage any discomfort and ensure a smooth recovery.
Dental Filling Alternatives
While dental fillings are standard for treating tooth decay, other options like crowns or tooth extraction may be considered in some cases:
Dental Crowns:
Crowns fully encase the tooth to restore structure and strength. They provide more protection than fillings but require more tooth removal. Crowns are ideal for extensive decay or weak teeth. The pros are durability and preserving the natural tooth, but they do cost more than simple fillings. Dr. Alex will evaluate your child’s specific case and determine if a pediatric dental crown is a better option for your child’s treatment.
Tooth Extraction:
Extraction is sometimes necessary if the decay has advanced to the point of tooth infection and a root canal or pulpotomy is not possible. Removing the tooth completely eliminates disease but means losing the natural tooth. If baby teeth are being removed, we may recommend space maintainers to hold the space until adult teeth are ready to emerge. If a permanent tooth needs to be extracted, we will recommend a tooth replacement option that aligns with your child’s needs.
Dr. Alex will determine the best treatment approach tailored to your child’s needs and oral health. Many factors are considered when choosing between fillings, crowns, or extractions. Rest assured Dr. Alex will provide her very best recommendation based on your child’s specific needs.
Caring for Dental Fillings
To help dental fillings last and avoid issues like cracks or injury, be sure your child:
- Avoids sticky, hard, crunchy foods like caramel, chips, nuts, etc. for the first 24 hours after the procedure
- Practices gentle but thorough tooth brushing 2x per day
- Flosses daily, being very careful around the new filling
- Uses a fluoride mouthwash daily to protect teeth
- Keeps follow-up appointments with Dr. Alex every 6 months
Following these guidelines will help the restored tooth remain healthy and strong! Please call us with any questions.
Preventing Future Cavities
The best way to prevent cavities and the need for fillings is through regular dental check-ups and good oral hygiene habits. Encourage your child to brush twice a day, floss daily, and limit sugary foods and drinks. Regular visits to Kids Tooth Team can also help identify potential issues early, before they require more complex treatment.
In addition to limiting sugary foods and maintaining thorough oral hygiene through daily brushing and flossing, consider these preventive steps:
- Dental Sealants: Sealants provide a protective plastic coating over back teeth grooves to prevent cavities. They are simple and painless to apply.
- Fluoride Toothpastes & Mouthwash: Fluoride strengthens enamel to better withstand acid attacks leading to decay. Look for kid-friendly toothpastes with fluoride.
- Regular Dental Checkups: Children should visit a Buda pediatric dentist every 6 months for dental exams and preventive care — like dental sealants — before issues arise. Catching problems early is key!
- Proper Toothbrush Selection: Choose age-appropriate toothbrushes with soft bristles that allow the child to clean effectively without irritation. Replace every 3-4 months.
