Why Teeth Might Need to Be Extracted

There are a few key reasons why your child's teeth may need to be removed:

  • Trauma: Sometimes a tooth gets damaged beyond repair due to an accident or injury.
  • Overcrowding: When teeth are too close together, it can make cleaning difficult, leading to plaque buildup and potential dental issues. Overcrowded baby teeth can also interfere with the proper alignment of permanent teeth.
  • Infection: A severe tooth infection can cause significant pain and pose a risk to your child’s overall health. Extracting the affected tooth can stop the infection from spreading and provide relief.

How Teeth Are Extracted

There are two methods for extracting children’s teeth:

  • Simple Extractions: This method is used when the tooth is fully visible above the gum line and easily accessible. The area around the tooth is numbed with a local anesthetic, and the tooth is loosened with a device called an elevator before being removed with forceps.
  • Surgical Extractions: If the tooth is not fully visible or is partially below the gum line, a surgical extraction is required. The Buda pediatric dentist numbs the area, makes a small incision in the gum to access the tooth, and then loosens and removes it.

Controlling and Managing Pain During Extraction

Most extractions are performed under local anesthetic, numbing the area so that your child only feels pressure during the procedure. For children who are particularly nervous, gentle sedation can be used to help them relax before the extraction.

Tooth Extraction Aftercare

Children typically recover quickly from tooth extractions. They may experience some tenderness, similar to a bruise, for a couple of days, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief. In cases of more severe discomfort after a difficult extraction, the dentist may prescribe stronger medication. Most children are fully recovered within 7-14 days.
