What Is a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is any oral health issue causing your child pain, discomfort, or serious bleeding. If your child is in pain and you’re unsure what to do, it’s time to seek help from an experienced dentist.

Dental trauma, such as cracked or broken teeth, loose or missing teeth, and oral cuts or lacerations, often leads to emergencies and requires immediate care. Other conditions that qualify as emergencies include a pulled-out or loose crown or filling, a severe toothache, or even food stuck between your child's teeth that won’t come out. When in doubt, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Call Kids Tooth Team and let us know about your situation. We’ll ensure your child gets the care they need. Our team of doctors is also available for at-home teledentistry consultations. Through a two-way video chat, we may be able to address the concern without you having to visit the office.

The Importance of Immediate Care

Immediate dental care is crucial if your child has a dental emergency for several reasons.

First, it prevents further complications related to their condition, saving you both time and money. For example, treating a serious cavity early can avoid the need for a more invasive procedure like nerve treatment.

Seeing a dentist right away also helps your child find relief from pain and discomfort, allowing them to return to their daily activities. After treatment, you'll have peace of mind knowing that your child’s smile is healthy and free from major dental issues.

Additionally, if your child’s tooth is cracked or knocked out, especially an adult tooth, it is essential to see a dentist quickly to give that tooth the best chance of survival. Please call us immediately if your child experiences dental trauma so we can provide prompt care.

What to Do in a Dental Emergency

Not sure what to do when your child has a dental emergency? Follow these steps to ensure they get the care they need from Kids Tooth Team:

Head or Neck Trauma: If your child has lost consciousness or experienced suspected head or neck trauma, call 911 or take them to the emergency room first. Medical doctors will need to rule out any possibility of a concussion or serious head injury before we address any dental concerns.
Severe Adult Tooth Injury: If an adult tooth is knocked out or broken to the point that you see blood, bring your child to our office immediately. The sooner we see them, the better the chances of saving the tooth. It may need to be splinted.
Minor Adult Tooth Injury: If an adult tooth has a small chip or feels loose, visit us on the same day as the accident. We need to check if the tooth needs splinting and ensure there’s no further damage to the tooth, root, or jawbone.
Severe Baby Tooth Injury: If a baby tooth is knocked out or broken to the point that you see blood, visit us as soon as possible (same day or next day). Although baby teeth cannot be placed back in the mouth like adult teeth, we need to ensure no root fragments are left in the bone and determine if stitches are needed.
Minor Baby Tooth Injury: If a baby tooth has a small chip or feels loose, come in the same day or next day after the accident. We need to ensure the root hasn’t fractured and the chip isn’t too close to the nerve.

For any dental emergency, contact Kids Tooth Team right away to ensure your child receives prompt and appropriate care.

Handling Lost or Chipped Teeth

If your child loses or chips a tooth, place the tooth or tooth fragment in a container of milk or a cup of saliva  to keep it moist. It's crucial to be seen within an hour at the office. Never put the tooth in cold water or on ice. If dental work like a filling, crown, or space maintainer is pulled out or falls out, put it in a small plastic bag or container and bring it with you.

Pain Management and Bleeding

Over-the-counter medicine like children’s Tylenol or Motrin can help with pain. If your child’s mouth is bleeding, use clean paper towels or gauze to absorb the blood. Never apply over-the-counter numbing medicine or teething gel to your child’s mouth or gums, as these can cause serious, life-threatening reactions. While pain medicine or ice may offer short-term relief, they are temporary measures. The pain could indicate a serious issue with your child’s teeth or mouth. Ensure you visit Kids Tooth Team in Buda for professional dental care right away.

Should I Go To The ER To Address My Child’s Tooth Pain?

The answer is usually “no.” The Emergency Room (ER) is designed for very serious, life-threatening emergencies only. In most cases, tooth pain does not qualify as a life-threatening emergency, so it’s better to see a qualified pediatric emergency dentist like Dr. Alex.

Another reason to avoid the ER is that most emergency rooms don’t have a dentist on staff. If they do, they typically won’t specialize in pediatric dental care. Even if you go to the ER, the staff may recommend seeing a local emergency dentist for proper treatment.

Additionally, the ER is much more expensive. Even if they can provide minor dental treatment, you’ll pay a premium compared to taking your child to an emergency dentist in Buda.

There are exceptions, of course. If you believe your child’s life is in danger, you should go to the ER. For example, if they’ve had a severe accident and you suspect a broken jaw, head straight to the ER. Similarly, if a dental issue is preventing your child from swallowing or breathing properly, the ER is the right place to go.

Overall, use your best judgment. While tooth pain and other dental emergencies can be urgent and require immediate care, they are not usually life-threatening. Kids Tooth Team is typically the best place to seek emergency dental care for your child.

Understanding The Most Common Dental Emergencies For Kids

Whether you’re the parent of a toddler or a teenager, many situations can arise requiring emergency dental treatment from the team at Kids Tooth Team. Wondering what the most common dental emergencies for kids are? Here’s a look at them and the procedures needed to treat them.

Toothaches/Infected Teeth
Toothaches
can occur for various reasons. If your child complains of a persistent, worsening toothache, they may have an infected tooth. This infection occurs when oral trauma or tooth decay damages the tooth's exterior, exposing the inner "pulp" to bacteria. Depending on the severity, your child may need a pulpotomy or a root canal. In these procedures, Dr. Alex will remove the infection, treat the tooth, and cover it with a crown to protect it.

Broken, Chipped, and Cracked Teeth

Dental trauma can happen unexpectedly, whether your child is playing sports, horsing around, or taking a nasty fall. Chipped, cracked, and broken teeth are all dental emergencies requiring immediate care to relieve pain and prevent complications. Contact Kids Tooth Team right away if your child damages a tooth. Dr. Alex will determine the appropriate treatment, which may involve a filling or crown, and possibly a pulpotomy or root canal for deeper cracks.

Loose Teeth

A loose baby tooth is typically not a concern unless caused by trauma. However, a loose adult tooth or an early loose baby tooth is a dental emergency. In kids, loose teeth are usually due to trauma, though gum disease is a rare cause. For loose baby teeth, Dr. Alex will check the tooth's condition and may remove it, placing a space maintainer to keep the proper gap until the permanent tooth emerges. For loose adult teeth, tooth splinting is often the best option. Dr. Alex will use special materials to hold the tooth in place, allowing it to heal and reattach properly.

Knocked-Out Teeth

A knocked-out tooth is always a dental emergency. If your child knocks out a tooth, call Kids Tooth Team immediately. The tooth must be replaced within 1-2 hours to be saved. Recover the tooth, place it in a container of cold milk, and bring it to our office. For a knocked-out baby tooth, Dr. Alex may recommend a space maintainer. If it's an adult tooth, Dr. Alex will reinsert it and splint it to adjacent teeth. Prompt treatment can often save the tooth.

Lacerations and Cuts to the Mouth

Falls or facial impacts can cause teeth to cut the cheeks, tongue, and lips. Minor cuts usually don't need treatment, but deep cuts that don't stop bleeding within a few minutes can be painful and pose an infection risk. If your child has deep lacerations or cuts that continue to bleed, call Kids Tooth Team for an emergency appointment. Dr. Alex can clean the area, suture the wound, and ensure proper healing.
